In human society and its environment (HSIE), both subjects of history and geography are mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10.
Students learn specific historical and geographical concepts and skills in history and geography. They also have an opportunity to learn more about people and the societies and environments in which they live through elective subjects in Years 7 to 10 (Stages 4 to 5).
A large number of individual subjects make up the key learning area of HSIE in which students:
- research, gather and analyse information
- question and make judgements
- write for a variety of purposes.
In Year 11 and 12, students can choose from a range of HSIE courses. These include:
- Aboriginal Studies
- Ancient History
- Business Studies
- Economics
- Geography
- History Extension
- Legal Studies
- Modern History
- Society and Culture
- Studies of Religion.
'HSIE (Human Society and It's Environment) involves the study of people, cultures, societies and environments in different places in different times. It contains a vast array of courses for students to study including Geography, History, Commerce, Economics, Business Studies, Modern History, Aboriginal Studies, Ancient History and Society and Culture.
These courses are studied as part of the mandatory requirements for students to complete in Years 7-10, as well being offered as elective subjects to be chosen in Year 9 and 10 (Stage 5).
In the Senior school, the choice of HSIE subjects students have the option to select as part of their HSC studies is enormous.
HSIE courses typically allow for a mix of theoretical based learning, as well as the opportunity to enjoy some practical and out of the classroom experiences. Whether it is spending a day at the beach as part of the coastal management unit in stage 5 Geography, running a business in stage 5 Commerce, visiting the IMAX theatre to view captivating movies relating to stage 4 and 5 units in History and Geography or enjoying the thrill of viewing amazing museum exhibitions for Ancient History.
The teacher staff in HSIE are enthusiastic, creative and have a deep passionate and interest in HSIE subjects. Classrooms are frequently buzzing with the sound of busy and interested students deeply involved an array of tasks such as constructing a rainforest, building models of natural wonders, creating masks and other artwork reflecting Ancient Egypt, participating in a Medieval display dressed in chain amour or making " hard tack " biscuits just like the ones our ANZACS ate.
The HSIE Faculty at Windsor High School has a long tradition of meeting the needs of students through positive teaching and learning relationships and we embrace active and constructive involvement and contributions to class by students.
