Science

Science is mandatory for all students from Year 7 to Year 10.

Science 7-10 provides a way of inquiring about the world around us. It explores evidence and investigates ways to discover, develop and produce solutions to real-world problems. Science emphasises the skills for working scientifically, as well as critical and creative thinking to address scientific issues.

In Years 11 and 12, students can choose from different science disciplines, including:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Earth and Environmental Science
  • Investigating Science
  • Physics.

In Year 12, students who are studying at least one other science subject may also choose to study Science Extension.

Science at Windsor is about preparing students to take an active and informed role in their own future by focusing on developing their skills in finding valid and reliable answers to questions and concurrently exposing them to the basic facts and fundamental ‘big ideas' of Science.

The nature of Science provides the basis for developing confident and independent thinkers. The Science faculty achieves this through structured learning tasks to develop independence in such skills as;

  • Designing valid experiments through the careful consideration of the question to be investigated and the identification of variables.
  • Problem solving, including exploring alternate and creative ways of investigating ideas.
  • Making careful observations and recording results clearly and honestly.
  • Analysing data using various techniques to draw valid conclusions.
  • Evaluating investigations and conclusions by comparing with other data.
  • Developing appropriate, subject specific metalanguage to communicate and share findings.
  • Investigating how each area is related to the bigger picture of scientific knowledge and understanding.

The Science Space

We are fortunate to have six laboratories which means that all Science lessons are able to be timetabled into a laboratory. The Laboratories are equipped with data projectors or interactive whiteboards and a set of laptops available for class use, enabling the integration of diverse technologies in presentation and learning.
Our teachers are university trained and have wide experience in multiple science disciplines as well as in industry and research. Thus we are able to offer a very wide curriculum and provide insights into real world applications of Science and Science Careers.
